What is Cetraxal Plus?

Cetraxal Plus is a prescription ear drop treatment used to manage acute otitis externa—also known as swimmer’s ear—in adults and children aged 6 months and older. It contains two key ingredients: ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that eliminates the bacteria causing the infection, and fluocinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, swelling, redness, and itching in the ear canal.

This dual-action formula provides both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, making it highly effective in treating bacterial ear infections that present with pain, discharge, and irritation. Ciprofloxacin targets and kills the harmful bacteria responsible for the infection, while fluocinolone acetonide helps relieve the uncomfortable symptoms that accompany inflammation.

Cetraxal Plus is supplied in convenient single-dose units. These sterile, pre-measured ampoules make it easy to apply the medication hygienically and accurately into the affected ear. The formulation ensures localised treatment directly at the site of infection, meaning the medicine works exactly where it’s needed without entering the bloodstream or causing widespread side effects.

This medication is particularly beneficial for people frequently exposed to water or moisture, such as swimmers or individuals working in humid environments, as excessive moisture in the ear canal can create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. It’s also suitable for those with narrow or sensitive ear canals who are more prone to irritation and infection.

The typical treatment course lasts for 7 consecutive days. It’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions precisely and to complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early. Failure to do so could result in incomplete eradication of the infection and the potential for recurrence or resistance.

Cetraxal Plus should be used only in the ear and must not be ingested or used in the eyes. Always keep the head tilted for a few minutes after administration to ensure the drops reach deep into the ear canal, and avoid getting the treated ear wet during the course.

How should I use Cetraxal Plus?

  • Use one single-dose container per affected ear, twice daily (morning and evening) for 7 days.
  • Warm the container in your hands before use to avoid dizziness.
  • Lie on your side and instill the contents into the ear canal.
  • Remain lying for at least 1 minute to ensure penetration.
  • Do not insert any objects into the ear after administration.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Common: ear discomfort, itching, or mild burning sensation.
  • Less common: dry skin, strange taste in mouth (if drainage occurs).
  • Rare but serious: allergic reactions, swelling, or worsening of infection.

Stop using and seek medical advice if you experience swelling, rash, or hearing changes.

What ingredients are in Cetraxal Plus?

  • Active ingredients: Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (0.2%), Fluocinolone acetonide (0.025%)
  • Other ingredients: Benzalkonium chloride, hypromellose, purified water, sodium acetate, glacial acetic acid.

How should Cetraxal Plus be stored?

  • Store below 25°C in a dry place away from direct light.
  • Keep unused unit-dose containers in their protective pouch.
  • Discard opened containers immediately after single use—do not reuse.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
