What is Zyban?

Zyban is a prescription-only medicine designed to help people quit smoking. Its active ingredient is bupropion hydrochloride, a compound originally developed as an antidepressant. During clinical use, researchers discovered that bupropion also reduced the urge to smoke—leading to its licensing for smoking cessation under the name Zyban.

Zyban works by altering the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly dopamine and noradrenaline. These chemicals are involved in the brain’s reward and pleasure systems and are stimulated by nicotine. When a person smokes, nicotine increases dopamine levels, reinforcing the habit. By helping to maintain these chemical levels even without nicotine, Zyban reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting.

Treatment with Zyban usually begins one to two weeks before your planned quit date. This is to allow the medication to build up in your system, so it can start moderating cravings before you stop smoking completely. Initially, a lower dose is taken once daily, which is then increased after a few days to a standard twice-daily dose. The full course of treatment generally lasts 7 to 9 weeks, though this may vary depending on individual progress and your doctor’s advice.

Unlike nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs) such as patches, gums, or lozenges, Zyban does not contain nicotine. Instead, it acts on the brain’s chemistry to reduce the desire to smoke. This makes it a good option for individuals who have not succeeded with NRTs or prefer a non-nicotine approach. It is especially helpful for people who experience intense psychological cravings or emotional triggers to smoke.

For best results, Zyban should be used in combination with a structured smoking cessation programme. Support groups, one-on-one counselling, or NHS stop-smoking services can significantly increase your chances of success when paired with this treatment.

Zyban may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with a history of seizures, eating disorders, or certain mental health conditions. Your GP or prescriber will assess whether it’s the right choice for you. When used correctly and with strong motivation to quit, Zyban can be a valuable tool in the journey toward becoming smoke-free.

How should I take Zyban?

  • Start taking Zyban 1–2 weeks before your planned quit date.
  • Take one tablet daily for the first three days, then increase to twice daily if advised.
  • Swallow tablets whole with water—do not crush or chew.
  • Take doses at least 8 hours apart and avoid taking close to bedtime.
  • Complete the full course, usually 7 to 9 weeks, unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Common: dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea.
  • Less common: dizziness, anxiety, or changes in taste.
  • Rare but serious: seizures, mood changes, allergic reactions.

Stop using and seek medical advice if you experience seizures or serious mental health symptoms.
