Phenoxymethylpenicillin Tablets are a type of penicillin antibiotic used to treat a variety of mild to moderate bacterial infections. Also known as Penicillin V, this medication is widely prescribed for infections of the throat, mouth, and upper respiratory tract, as well as dental infections and some skin conditions. It is also used long-term in specific cases to prevent rheumatic fever or recurrent infections in at-risk individuals.

How It Works

Phenoxymethylpenicillin works by interfering with the ability of bacteria to form their protective cell walls. This weakens the bacteria and causes them to burst and die. As a bactericidal antibiotic, it helps the body clear the infection effectively. It’s most effective against gram-positive bacteria and is particularly suited to streptococcal infections, such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and scarlet fever. The tablets are best absorbed when taken on an empty stomach.

Why Choose Phenoxymethylpenicillin Tablets

Phenoxymethylpenicillin Tablets for infection are a tried and tested first-line treatment option, particularly in throat infections and as prophylaxis in post-scarlet fever or rheumatic heart disease. They are well tolerated by most patients, effective against targeted bacterial strains, and affordable. Healthcare providers commonly prescribe them to treat or prevent infections in both adults and children.

As a narrow-spectrum antibiotic, Phenoxymethylpenicillin causes less disruption to gut flora compared to broader-spectrum alternatives. This makes it a favourable option for patients who do not require more aggressive antibiotics.

Important Note

Phenoxymethylpenicillin should not be used by anyone with a known penicillin allergy. Always take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if symptoms resolve early. Avoid taking it with meals as this reduces absorption. Store in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children, and never use leftover antibiotics for future illness.

Can I stop taking Phenoxymethylpenicillin if I feel better?

No. Always finish the full course as prescribed to prevent antibiotic resistance and recurrence of infection.

No. It is best taken on an empty stomach—ideally 30 minutes before or 2 hours after food—for maximum absorption.

It typically begins working within 24 to 48 hours, although symptoms may take several days to fully improve.

It is commonly used to treat throat infections (like tonsillitis), dental infections, scarlet fever, and to prevent rheumatic fever.
