Tamsulosin is a widely used alpha-blocker prescribed to relieve urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland commonly affecting men over 50. It is formulated as a modified-release capsule containing 400 micrograms of tamsulosin hydrochloride, designed for once-daily use.

The symptoms of BPH include a weak urine stream, difficulty starting urination, frequent night-time urination, and sudden urgency. These occur due to pressure from the enlarged prostate on the urethra and bladder.

Tamsulosin helps by relaxing smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to pass urine. It does not shrink the prostate but significantly improves quality of life by reducing urinary resistance. It is commonly used as a first-line treatment or in combination with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors for long-term prostate management.

The modified-release formulation ensures steady delivery of the medication over 24 hours, improving tolerability and reducing the risk of sudden drops in blood pressure.

How It Works

Tamsulosin selectively blocks alpha-1A adrenoceptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck. This leads to muscle relaxation, reduced bladder outlet resistance, and improved urinary flow.

Why Choose Tamsulosin

First-line therapy for managing moderate-to-severe BPH symptoms

Rapid symptom improvement within days

Modified-release for once-daily dosing

Well-tolerated with low risk of systemic side effects

No impact on PSA levels or long-term prostate size

Important Note

Take Tamsulosin at the same time daily, ideally after the same meal. Do not crush or chew the capsules.
Inform your doctor if you are planning cataract or glaucoma surgery, as Tamsulosin may cause intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS).
Report symptoms of dizziness, fainting, or palpitations to your GP, especially during early treatment.
