What Are Loperamide 2mg Capsules?

Loperamide 2mg Capsules provide fast, effective relief from short-term diarrhoea. They work by slowing down bowel movements, helping your body absorb more water and salts to restore balance. Ideal for travel or sudden flare-ups, these capsules help reduce the urgency and frequency of trips to the loo — so you can feel more comfortable and back in control.

What Are Loperamide Capsules Used For?

These capsules are commonly used to treat:

— Acute (short-term) diarrhoea
— Diarrhoea linked to mild IBS (when diagnosed by a doctor)
— Sudden tummy upsets during travel
— Occasional flare-ups of loose stools

They’re suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over, but only use as directed on the label or by a pharmacist.

How Do Loperamide 2mg Capsules Work?

Loperamide works by:

— Slowing down movement in the gut
— Helping the intestines absorb more fluids and electrolytes
— Making stools firmer and reducing frequency

Relief can start within 1–2 hours of taking the first capsule.

How Should Loperamide Be Taken?

Follow the instructions provided on the pack or from your pharmacist. General guidance includes:

— Take 2 capsules to start, then 1 capsule after each loose stool
— Do not take more than 6 capsules in 24 hours
— Swallow whole with water
— Do not use for more than 48 hours without speaking to a doctor

Always read the patient leaflet before use.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Most people use Loperamide with no problems, but side effects can occur.

Common side effects:
— Constipation
— Headache
— Nausea

Rare side effects (seek help):
— Severe stomach pain or swelling
— Skin rash or itching
— Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing)

Stop using and speak to a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen.

Who Should Avoid Loperamide Capsules?

Do not take Loperamide if you:

— Have blood or mucus in your stools
— Have a high temperature or severe tummy pain
— Are under 12 years old (unless advised by a doctor)
— Are pregnant or breastfeeding (check with your GP or pharmacist first)

Always check with a healthcare professional before using it alongside other medications.

How Should Loperamide Capsules Be Stored?

To keep the capsules safe and effective:

— Store below 25°C in a dry place
— Keep in the original packaging
— Keep out of sight and reach of children
— Do not use after the expiry date
