Mercilon is a low-dose combined oral contraceptive pill that provides effective protection against pregnancy. It is intended for use by women of reproductive age who wish to manage their fertility with a daily hormonal pill. In addition to preventing pregnancy, Mercilon may also help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual pain, and lighten bleeding. Its lower hormone dose makes it a suitable option for women who may be sensitive to higher-dose contraceptives.

How It Works
Mercilon contains two active ingredients: desogestrel (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an oestrogen). These hormones mimic the natural female sex hormones to prevent ovulation, meaning no egg is released for fertilisation. Additionally, Mercilon thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the womb, and alters the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting. These combined effects provide over 99% effectiveness when taken correctly.

Why Choose Mercilon
Mercilon is widely prescribed due to its reliability, low hormone content, and good tolerability in many users. It provides the reassurance of a predictable 28-day cycle, often resulting in lighter and less painful periods. Its low oestrogen content (20 mcg) may also reduce the risk of oestrogen-related side effects, such as breast tenderness and fluid retention. For women new to the pill or those sensitive to higher doses, Mercilon offers a balanced approach to contraception.

Important Note
Mercilon is not suitable for everyone and must be prescribed after a full medical consultation. It is not recommended for women with a history of blood clots, stroke, migraines with aura, or certain cancers. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Women over 35 who smoke should discuss alternative options with their healthcare provider. Regular check-ups are advised while using hormonal contraception.

Not to be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a healthcare provider.

Can I take Mercilon with food or alcohol?

Yes, Mercilon can be taken with or without food. Moderate alcohol consumption does not interfere with the effectiveness of the pill, but consistent daily use is essential.

Mercilon works by using synthetic hormones to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus to block sperm entry, and alter the uterine lining to reduce the chances of implantation.

Mercilon should be taken once daily at the same time each day for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break. It is important to follow the cycle as prescribed for continuous contraceptive protection.

Mercilon is not suitable for women with certain medical conditions like clotting disorders, liver disease, or hormone-sensitive cancers. A healthcare provider must assess your medical history before prescribing.

Mercilon is used as a combined oral contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy. It may also help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce period-related symptoms in some users.
