What is Salamol Inhaler?

Salamol Inhaler is a prescription-only, fast-acting reliever inhaler used to treat and prevent symptoms of asthma and other respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It contains the active ingredient salbutamol, a type of short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) that helps to relax the muscles surrounding the airways in the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

The Salamol Inhaler is a traditional press-and-breathe metered-dose inhaler (MDI) that delivers a precise and consistent amount of medication with each actuation. It is particularly suitable for individuals who are comfortable using standard inhalers and who have developed good coordination between actuation and inhalation. It works quickly—usually within minutes—to relieve symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

Salamol is often referred to as a “blue inhaler” and is typically used as a rescue or reliever inhaler. It’s intended for occasional use when symptoms occur or before anticipated exposure to asthma triggers, such as exercise, cold air, or allergens. While it provides rapid relief, it is not designed to be used regularly for long-term control. For ongoing management of asthma, Salamol is commonly used in conjunction with a preventer inhaler, such as an inhaled corticosteroid.

The medication can also be used preventatively, for example, before strenuous activity or contact with known irritants. In this context, it helps prevent the onset of asthma symptoms, especially exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

To ensure the medicine reaches the lungs effectively, it’s important to use the inhaler with correct technique. Your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist can demonstrate how to use it properly or recommend a spacer device if you have difficulty coordinating your breath with actuation.

Salamol Inhaler is well tolerated, but like all medications, it may cause side effects. The most common include tremors, headache, and a racing heartbeat (palpitations), particularly if used frequently or in high doses. These effects are usually mild and short-lived. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions and keep track of how often you use your reliever inhaler—frequent use may indicate that your asthma is not well controlled and requires a treatment review.

How should I use Salamol Inhaler?

  • Shake the inhaler well before use.
  • Breathe out gently, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth.
  • Press the canister while inhaling deeply and slowly through your mouth.
  • Hold your breath for a few seconds before exhaling.
  • Wait around 30 seconds before a second puff, if needed.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Common: headache, shakiness, and a faster heartbeat.
  • Less common: muscle cramps, dry mouth, or throat irritation.
  • Rare but serious: chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or allergic reaction.

If you notice any unusual or severe symptoms, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

What ingredients are in Salamol Inhaler?

  • Active ingredient: Salbutamol (as sulphate)
  • Other ingredients: Propellant HFA-134a (norflurane), ethanol, and oleic acid.

How should Salamol Inhaler be stored?

  • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
  • Do not puncture or incinerate, even when empty.
