About Wegovy® Tablets

Wegovy® (semaglutide) is a prescription-only weight loss treatment developed by Novo Nordisk. Until recently, semaglutide was only available as a weekly injection. The tablet form offers the same active ingredient in a once-daily pill, making it a practical option for adults who prefer to avoid injections.

Semaglutide works by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This hormone is released after eating and plays a key role in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. By activating GLP-1 receptors in the brain, Wegovy® helps reduce hunger, increase feelings of fullness, and lower overall calorie intake.

Wegovy® tablets are intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity as part of a structured weight management programme. They are prescribed where clinically appropriate following a full medical assessment.

Wegovy® tablets have been approved by the MHRA for weight loss in the UK. They are currently only available via private prescription.

Directions

  • Take one tablet once daily, every day at the same time
  • Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, before any food, drink, or other medication
  • Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 120 ml (half a cup) of plain water only
  • Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking any other oral medicines
  • Follow your prescriber’s dose schedule, which will gradually increase your dose over time to reduce the chance of side effects
  • If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next tablet the following morning as usual — do not take two doses on the same day

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Wegovy® tablets can cause side effects. Most are mild to moderate and tend to improve as your body adjusts to the medication, particularly during the dose-increase phase.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Indigestion or heartburn
  • Reduced appetite

Serious side effects — seek medical advice promptly if you experience:

Storage

  • Store at room temperature, below 30°C
  • Keep tablets in the original blister pack to protect them from moisture
  • Only remove a tablet from the blister immediately before taking it
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging
  • Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste — ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer need

Both the tablet and the injection contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide. The key difference is how they are taken: the injection is given once a week, while the tablet is taken once daily. The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach with strict timing rules to ensure it is absorbed properly.

Results vary between individuals. Wegovy® works gradually as your dose is increased over several months. Clinically meaningful weight loss is typically seen over a period of weeks to months when used consistently alongside diet and lifestyle changes.

Wegovy® tablets are used for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or in adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. They are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

There are no specific foods to avoid, but the tablet must be taken on a completely empty stomach. Food consumed before or too soon after taking the tablet significantly reduces how well the medication is absorbed. Follow the 30-minute waiting rule strictly.
