What is Cinnarizine?

Cinnarizine is a widely used medicine for the treatment and prevention of symptoms related to motion sickness, vertigo, and other inner ear balance disorders. As an antihistamine with calcium channel blocking properties, it works by calming the inner ear and reducing the stimulation of the vestibular system—the part of the body responsible for maintaining balance. This helps reduce sensations of spinning (vertigo), dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.

It is particularly effective in managing symptoms of conditions such as Ménière’s disease, labyrinthitis, and vestibular neuritis. These disorders can lead to frequent episodes of imbalance, tinnitus, and pressure in the ear. Cinnarizine helps stabilise these symptoms and improves quality of life for many people with chronic balance problems.

Cinnarizine Tablets are also used to prevent motion sickness, a common condition triggered by movement during travel by car, plane, or boat. The medication is typically taken around two hours before the start of the journey and can be followed by additional doses if the trip is prolonged.

Each tablet contains cinnarizine, and the typical dosage is one to two tablets up to three times a day, depending on the age of the patient and the condition being treated. It’s important to follow the directions provided by your doctor or pharmacist and to avoid exceeding the recommended dose.

While cinnarizine is generally well tolerated, some people may experience mild side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, or gastrointestinal discomfort. Because it may cause sleepiness, it’s advisable not to drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.

Cinnarizine is not intended for long-term continuous use unless prescribed as part of an ongoing treatment plan. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease or those taking other sedative medications should consult their doctor before use, as cinnarizine can potentially worsen symptoms or interact with other treatments.

Overall, Cinnarizine is a trusted and effective option for controlling balance disorders and motion-related symptoms, offering relief and greater stability for those impacted by inner ear disturbances or travel sensitivity.

How should I take Cinnarizine?

  • For balance disorders: take 1 tablet 3 times daily, or as directed.
  • For travel sickness: take 1 tablet 2 hours before travel, then every 8 hours as needed.
  • Swallow with water after food to reduce risk of stomach upset.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Common: drowsiness, dry mouth, stomach upset, weight gain.
  • Less common: muscle weakness, increased appetite.
  • Rare but serious: tremors, involuntary movements, allergic reactions such as rash or swelling.

Avoid driving or operating machinery if affected by drowsiness. Consult your doctor if symptoms are severe or prolonged.
