What is Cyclizine

Cyclizine is a widely used anti-sickness medicine designed to treat and prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. It is commonly recommended for conditions such as motion sickness, vertigo, Ménière’s disease, and nausea caused by inner ear disorders or post-operative recovery. Cyclizine works by affecting the brain’s balance and vomiting centre, helping to reduce the sensations that lead to nausea and sickness.

Belonging to a class of drugs known as antihistamines, Cyclizine is different from traditional allergy medications in that it primarily targets receptors in the brain linked to motion and balance. This makes it particularly effective for individuals who suffer from travel-related motion sickness or dizziness caused by vestibular conditions. Although technically an antihistamine, Cyclizine’s mechanism of action offers relief from nausea rather than allergic reactions.

Cyclizine is often prescribed for adults and children over the age of 12. In some cases, it may also be used for younger children under strict medical supervision. The medication is also sometimes prescribed to manage nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, general anaesthesia, or post-surgical recovery. Its versatile anti-emetic properties make it a valuable option across a wide range of medical settings.

The tablets typically contain cyclizine hydrochloride and are usually taken one to three times per day, depending on the specific medical condition and the patient’s response to treatment. It begins to work within 30 to 60 minutes of ingestion and its effects can last for up to six hours or more. While many people do not experience drowsiness, this can still occur and may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Cyclizine is especially helpful when taken before travel to prevent the onset of motion sickness symptoms. It is often recommended to take a dose at least 30 minutes before a journey begins. For best results, follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions closely, and do not exceed the recommended dose.

Overall, Cyclizine offers effective and convenient relief for various forms of nausea and dizziness, helping to improve daily comfort and confidence during travel or illness.
