Aldara Cream 5% is a topical prescription treatment used to help the body eliminate external genital and perianal warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Each sachet contains imiquimod, a powerful immune response modifier that boosts your body’s natural defences to target and remove the virus-infected cells. Unlike traditional treatments that burn or freeze warts, Aldara supports your immune system in clearing them at the source.

This cream is applied directly to the affected area. The active ingredient, imiquimod, stimulates immune cells in the skin to release cytokines, including interferon-alpha, which are key players in your body’s antiviral defence. Over time, the local immune response helps destroy wart tissue without damaging surrounding healthy skin. The result is a gradual, natural reduction in visible warts.

Aldara is often recommended when other wart treatments have failed or when patients prefer a non-invasive approach. Most people begin seeing improvements within a few weeks, but full clearance can take up to 16 weeks of treatment. Its unique mode of action gives it a lasting impact, and recurrence rates can be lower compared to destructive methods.

The cream comes in single-use sachets, which make application convenient and hygienic. It is discreet, odourless, and suitable for use at home under medical guidance. Because it does not work by chemical burning or surgery, many users find it less intimidating than other wart treatments.

Aldara Cream is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) in the UK. It should only be used under the direction of a qualified healthcare provider. Always follow the instructions provided with your prescription to ensure safe and effective use.

If you’re looking for a proven, immune-based option for treating genital warts, Aldara Cream offers a clinically supported alternative with long-term benefits.

Directions

  • Dosage and frequency: Apply Aldara Cream three times a week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) before bedtime. Continue treatment until warts are cleared or for a maximum of 16 weeks.
  • How to apply: Wash hands and the affected area with mild soap and water; dry thoroughly. Apply a thin layer of cream to the wart area and rub in until the cream vanishes. Leave the cream on the skin for 6 to 10 hours; then wash off with mild soap and water.
  • Safety notes: Avoid sexual contact while the cream is on the skin. Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings. Wash your hands before and after application.
