Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites called Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrow into the skin to lay eggs. This leads to intense itching and a rash that often worsens at night. Scabies spreads easily through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and, less commonly, through shared clothing, bedding, or towels. Although it can affect anyone, it is more common in crowded living environments or places with close physical contact.
Symptoms typically appear two to six weeks after infestation for first-time infections, but can develop more quickly in repeat cases. The most common signs include intense itching, small red bumps, and thin, wavy burrow lines on the skin. These are often found between the fingers, on the wrists, elbows, waist, or genitals. Persistent scratching can cause skin sores, which may become infected if not treated properly.
Scabies is caused by the body’s allergic reaction to the mites and their waste. The mites themselves are microscopic, so they cannot be seen without magnification. They survive by feeding on the skin’s surface and reproduce rapidly, which is why early identification and treatment are essential to prevent spreading to others.
Because scabies spreads easily, everyone in close contact with an infected person—such as household members or partners—should be treated at the same time, even if they do not show symptoms. Washing all bedding, clothes, and towels in hot water and drying them on high heat helps kill any remaining mites. Items that cannot be washed should be sealed in a plastic bag for several days.
The itching may persist for a short period even after treatment, as the body continues to react to dead mites and their residue. Maintaining clean skin, avoiding scratching, and applying soothing creams can help ease irritation during recovery.
While scabies can be uncomfortable and disruptive, it is entirely treatable. Good hygiene, prompt treatment, and proper cleaning of clothing and bedding ensure full recovery and help prevent reinfection.
